 REGISTRATION EXAMINATION POLICY

 POLICY ON THE TRAINING OF GHANAIAN MEDICAL AND DENTAL STUDENTS IN OTHER JURISDICTIONS

PART I:  Candidates

After years of experience conducting the Registration Examination, and research in some of the foreign countries training Ghanaian doctors and dentists, the Council has decided as follows:

1. With effect from February, 2022, only candidates graduating from institutions recognized by Council will be admitted to Council’s Registration Examinations. A list of these institutions is available on the Council’s website, and further information may be obtained from Council’s offices.

2. (a) As pertains in Ghanaian institutions, only candidates with science background will be recommended for training abroad in medicine or dentistry. Candidates will be expected to  have passed with a minimum of “credit” in three elective science subjects at the SSCE/WASCE examinations or the equivalent.

(b)  Where this achievement is lacking before entry into a medical/dental training institution, there should be evidence of a structured preliminary course in the sciences – biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics or related subject with measurable equivalent outcomes as in paragraph ii(a) above before the candidate commences the study of medicine or dentistry.

(c)  With effect from January, 2025, only candidates with verifiable science backgrounds, as explained above, will be considered as adequately trained to be allowed to take the Registration Examination (see iv below).

3. (a) After passing the Registration Examination, candidates, mostly new graduates, shall undertake the mandatory two-year period of housemanship,

(b)    Special conditions apply to those who wish to be registered as specialists.  They must satisfy conditions laid down by Council.  The Additional qualification(s) should be registrable in the country of the specialist training. Further information may be obtained at the Council’s Secretariat.

4. Candidates seeking to register for Council’s registration examination will be required to submit for verification original or certified true copies of their academic certificates including SSCE/WASCE or equivalent or evidence of remedial course(s). Only candidates whose certificates have been verified are eligible for admission to take the registration examination.

5. With effect from February, 2022, the registration examinations will consist of two stages:

    • Stage 1: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
    • Stage 2: Clinical (Objective Structured Clinical Examinations [OSCE])/Oral examination

6. Duly certified registration examination results of candidates will be published on the Council’s website and notice boards. Candidates will also be individually notified of their performance and result.
