To advance excellence in Medical and Dental Training and Ethical Professional Practice in Ghana through quality assurance and standards, education and training, registration & licensing, and promotion of international cooperation and best practice in regulation.

OUR MANDATE

THE COUNCIL

The Medical and Dental Council is the Statutory Body established by law, under Part II of the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act, 2013 (Act 857), to secure in the public interest the highest standards in the training and practice of medicine and dentistry in Ghana.

MANDATE OF THE COUNCIL

The mandate of the Council is defined by four main strategic areas, namely, Standards & Quality Assurance, Education & Training, Registration & Licensing, and Regulation.

CORE COMPETENCIES OF A MEDICAL OR DENTAL PRACTITIONER

The evolving landscape of healthcare, characterised by emerging infectious diseases, the rise in non-communicable diseases, and the increasing role of technology — particularly Artificial Intelligence — has necessitated a continuous re-evaluation of Medical and Dental training. Additionally, global shortages in the healthcare workforce, trans-border migration of professionals, and a well-informed public that demands people-centred, ethical, and high-quality healthcare further emphasised the need for a dynamic, competency-based approach to medical and dental education. THE MEDICAL AND DENTAL COUNCIL The Medical and Dental Council is the statutory agency under the Ministry of Health established under Part II of the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act, 2013 (Act 857), responsible for the regulation of the training and practice of medicine and dentistry in Ghana. Functions of the Council Assess facilities and contents of programmes for the training of doctors and dentists and physician assistants in training institutions;Ensure that the pre-registration training of newly qualified doctors and dentists and physician assistants in accredited training institutions meets the required standards;Conduct examinations for the registration of foreign-trained medical and dental practitioners and physician assistants;Compile and keep registers of registered practitioners;Prescribe and enforce professional standards and conduct for practitioners;Conduct examinations for the registration of locally trained medical and dental practitioners and physician assistants who do not meet the prescribed conditions for registration; andPerform any other functions that are ancillary to the object of the Council. The Medical and Dental Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the WCEA to enable Medical and Dental Practitioners, Physician Assistants and Certified Registered Anaesthetists in the Diaspora to undertake Continuous Professional Developments (CPDs) with WCEA.
