To advance excellence in Medical and Dental Training and Ethical Professional Practice in Ghana through quality assurance and standards, education and training, registration & licensing, and promotion of international cooperation and best practice in regulation.

OUR MANDATE

THE COUNCIL

The Medical and Dental Council is the Statutory Body established by law, under Part II of the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act, 2013 (Act 857), to secure in the public interest the highest standards in the training and practice of medicine and dentistry in Ghana.

MANDATE OF THE COUNCIL

The mandate of the Council is defined by four main strategic areas, namely, Standards & Quality Assurance, Education & Training, Registration & Licensing, and Regulation.

CORE COMPETENCIES OF A MEDICAL OR DENTAL PRACTITIONER

The evolving landscape of healthcare, characterised by emerging infectious diseases, the rise in non-communicable diseases, and the increasing role of technology — particularly Artificial Intelligence — has necessitated a continuous re-evaluation of Medical and Dental training. Additionally, global shortages in the healthcare workforce, trans-border migration of professionals, and a well-informed public that demands people-centred, ethical, and high-quality healthcare further emphasised the need for a dynamic, competency-based approach to medical and dental education. THE MEDICAL AND DENTAL COUNCIL The Medical and Dental Council is the statutory agency under the Ministry of Health established under Part II of the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act, 2013 (Act 857), responsible for the regulation of the training and practice of medicine and dentistry in Ghana. Functions of the Council Assess facilities and contents of programmes for the training of doctors and dentists and physician assistants in training institutions;Ensure that the pre-registration training of newly qualified doctors and dentists and physician assistants in accredited training institutions meets the required standards;Conduct examinations for the registration of foreign-trained medical and dental practitioners and physician assistants;Compile and keep registers of registered practitioners;Prescribe and enforce professional standards and conduct for practitioners;Conduct examinations for the registration of locally trained medical and dental practitioners and physician assistants who do not meet the prescribed conditions for registration; andPerform any other functions that are ancillary to the object of the Council. These dedicated individuals, in pursuit of their noble calling, have demonstrated their commitment by passing the rigorous Licensure Examinations conducted by the Medical and Dental Council (MDC) of Ghana. Consequently, they have not only met but have exceeded the requisite training standards to practice as distinguished Medical Doctors and Dentists in Ghana. Our distinguished inductees for this ceremony hail from the University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS), University of Ghana Dental School (UGDS), Accra College of Medicine (ACM), University for Development Studies - School of Medical Health Sciences (UDS - SMHS), University of Cape Coast School of Medicine (UCC - SM), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology School of Medical Sciences (KNUST - SMS), as well as foreign-trained doctors and dentists who have, through dedication and determination, successfully undertaken and passed the Council's professional qualifying examinations. In a cherished tradition, they will all partake in the solemn swearing of the Hippocratic Oath, marking a significant milestone in their careers. This year's grand event is scheduled to be held at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC). With immense pride, we are pleased to welcome a total of two hundred and eleven (211) accomplished inductees. In a nod to the rapidly evolving times, the proceedings will also be broadcast live on this very platform. Induction of Newly Qualified Medical and Dental Practitioners - August 2024
Summary This periodic and significant event is organized for individuals upon completion of the prescribed and approved academic and practical training for Physician Assistants. All inductees must have written and passed the Licensure Examinations conducted by the Medical and Dental Council, Ghana (MDC Ghana). They therefore, meet the appropriate training standards for practice in Ghana. The inductees are from various accredited training institutions including the University of Cape Coast (UCC); Central University, Presbyterian University College, University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), College of Health and Wellbeing (COHW), Kintampo; Yamfo College of Health; Anglican University; Princefield College, Narh Bita College, Tema; Garden City University College - Kumasi; University for Development Studies, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), 37 Military Hospital, Ridge Hospital, Radford University College, and foreign-trained professionals who sat and passed the Council’s professional qualifying examinations. They will be led to swear the Hippocratic Oath. This year's event will take place at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons - Accra as the physical venue, with a total of three hundred (300) inductees. It will also be broadcast live on this platform, as well as on Facebook and YouTube for the benefit of all virtual attendees including parents, guardians, and the general public. The guest of honor for this event is the Hon. Minister of Health.
